Understanding the chemicals your workplace deals with requires knowing their storage risks. Equipped with this information, you can be proactive in ensuring the safe storage of hazardous substances.

Ecospill provides a large range of environmental safety equipment to national industry. If you need chemical safety cabinets for your workplace, read on to find out how to choose the right ones.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING CHEMICAL STORAGE OPTIONS

Different chemicals need different storage methods. So, before deciding on a storage option, you need to assess the substance that needs storing. Here are a few of the things you should consider:

Hazard Class

Identifying the hazard class a substance falls into is a great starting place. There are 9 hazard classes which are as follows:

  • Explosives
  • Gases
  • Flammable and combustible liquids
  • Flammable solids
  • Oxidizing substances and organic peroxides
  • Toxic substances and infectious substances
  • Radioactive materials
  • Corrosives
  • Miscellaneous Hazardous Materials

Categorising hazardous substances correctly is key. It helps keep your workplace, your people and the environment safe.

Safety Data Sheet (SDS) Specifications

Safe Work Australia requires workplaces to have copies of the SDS for any chemicals they use. These should be accessible by all workers or anybody who may come in contact with them.

The SDS is a simple way of determining the storage requirements for each hazard class. It includes details such as the chemical’s need for indoor or outdoor storage, whether it needs separation from other chemicals and how much ventilation it needs, for example.
