Back to Basics: The 7 Essential Steps to Workplace Spill Response
Managing hazardous liquids is a daily reality for many Australian industries. Whether you operate a workshop in Brisbane or a manufacturing plant in Perth, having spill kits in Australia is only half the battle, you need to know how to use them effectively and maintain them to ensure compliance.
In our latest video guide, we break down the 7 step approach to spill management.
1. Prioritise PPE
Before touching any spill, consult your Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Whether you need nitrile gloves, PVC protection, or high-vis gear, ensuring your team has the correct Personal Protective Equipment is the non-negotiable first step.
2. Assessment
Identify the flow. Where is the liquid heading? Locating drains and potential environmental entry points is crucial to prevent a minor spill from becoming a major environmental fine.
3. Containment
Stop the spread. Use drain seals, spill socks, and barriers to lock the spill in place. This protects your facility and simplifies the cleanup process.
4. Absorption
Using the right absorbent is key. For large volumes, mass absorbance is often required. Pro-tip: Use a stiff bristle broom to work the absorbent into the surface for maximum effectiveness.
5. Responsible Disposal
Disposal isn’t one-size-fits-all. You must understand the liquid’s properties and consult local Australian council requirements. For flammable or Class III liquids, always use anti-static waste bags to prevent ignition during the cleanup.
6. Reporting & Debrief
A spill is a learning opportunity. Why did it happen? How can we prevent a recurrence? Detailed reporting and team debriefs are essential components of a robust OHS strategy.
7. Spill Kit Maintenance & Restocking
A used spill kit is a liability. Regular spill kit maintenance involves checking the kit’s inventory list (usually on the lid) and replenishing all components immediately after an incident.
