What is the Difference Between Sediment Control and Erosion Control?

There are several key differences between sediment control and erosion control. Erosion control aims to reduce and prevent the erosion of soil from repetitive impacts such as raindrops and sheet flow. Whereas sediment control deals with sediment that becomes displaced or shifted. In this blog, we discuss the importance of these control measures, the difference between erosion and sediment movement, and the control methods that you can apply.

SEDIMENT CONTROL VS EROSION CONTROL

Erosion is a process in which a surface such as soil, becomes worn away. Erosion is caused by natural elements such as water and wind. Sediment movement is when sediment becomes displaced or moved, often due to natural elements. It is common for sediment movement to be caused by erosion, so you may need more than one control measure.

There are several effective control methods when dealing with sediment movement and erosion. Here are a few examples:

  • Silt Socks:  You can fill these geo-fabric socks with sand or gravel. They are great for diverting water which can help to prevent erosion.
  • Silt Fence: An ideal control measure you can apply on construction sites to help prevent soil contamination. A sediment fence allows water to pass through, whilst blocking sediments.
  • Silt Curtain: Silt curtains are ideal for controlling sediment on construction sites that are close to rivers, lakes, the sea or waterways. You can apply a silt curtain to prevent harmful sediments and substances like oil from leaking contaminating the water.
  • Coir Logs: Made from dense coconut fibres, these logs can be fitted to suit most shapes and are perfect for preventing erosion. Coir logs are 100% biodegradable and are great for long-term use.

It is important to note that each erosion and sediment control measure works well depending on the circumstance. Often, both sediment control and erosion controls will be used together. Ecospill has a wide variety of erosion control products that you can apply to many situations.

IMPORTANCE OF SEDIMENT CONTROL AND EROSION PREVENTION

By not using erosion and sediment control measures, you can have a serious impact on the environment and your worksite.

Erosion and sediment control measures are vital for most development sites. Erosion can affect the structural integrity of buildings and structures. This can occur when the soil underneath footings and foundations becomes wethered or displaced. You can prevent erosion on development sites with some of the control measures mentioned above.

Sediment run-off is a major issue that can harmfully impact local ecosystems. The Great Barrier Reef in Australia, Northern Queensland has been affected by sediment runoff for years. Once the sediment finds its way into the ocean, it forms a fine layer that covers the reef, blocking out the sun. This has huge implications for coral and marine life
