Why have a national colour standard for Spill Kit Types?
Previously, the various colours identifying spill kits was left to the discretion of the manufacturer. When Ecospill first commenced in 2003 we adopted the most common colour standard of red for fuel and oil kits, blue for hazchem kits and yellow for general purpose spill kits. However, with no national guideline for a colour standard, it led to confusion for Australian businesses. A Fuel and Oil Spill Kit could be any one of a multitude of colours. And in the moment of emergency, it is vital to eliminate confusion so that an operator doesn’t try to contain a spill emergency with the wrong equipment. Imagine if there was no colour standard for Fire Extinguishers, how would an operator know which equipment to deploy? In an emergency, you don’t have the luxury of time to read the small print.
The AusSpill Association was formed in 2014, with the sole purpose of providing a uniform standard and voice for the spill control environmental industry. One of the key goals was to develop a national colour standard for spill kit type identification, so that operators can be certain of the type of the spill kit by a momentary glance at it. This new colour standard has become uniform across the country, and has been adopted by all the leading suppliers of Spill Kits in Australia.
